Ashwini Bagga: A Crusader for Road Safety

Ashwini Bagga started his journey as a Road Safety Professional in 2010 from Udaipur, a famous tourist destination in Rajasthan popular as Lake City. In 2016 he joined as Consultant in State Road Safety Cell, Department of Transport and Road Safety, Government of Rajasthan. He also served as Principal Project Officer in Centre of Excellence for Road Safety, IIT Madras in Chennai but could not stay back due to certain post Covid complications and returned to his home town.

His valued contributions in the field of Road Safety to Government of Rajasthan include preparation of Road Safety Action Plan 2018-2020 which was approved by the Hon'ble Transport Minister of Rajasthan, preparation of Scheme u/s 135 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 which was notified by the Government on 03 Sep 2021, preparation of Rajasthan Road Safety Roadmap - 2020 which was approved by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Rajasthan. He also drafted a policy for granting Financial Assistance for Civil Societies working for Road Safety which is under consideration by the Government for approval. In addition, he has contributed for policy formulation at the apex level and implementation of activities under Budget Declarations pertaining to Road Safety. He has published several Books and Research Papers on the subject.

Road crashes and resulting injuries is a serious issue of concern for everyone. Crashes not only impact victim's family but it also affects a nation socially and economically. In India around 4 to 5 lakh road crashes are recorded annually which claim more than 1.6 lakh lives. The road crash statistics reported by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in India in 2022 are depicted below.

Road crashes is a complex issue which requires multi-pronged approach along with collective and coordinated efforts of various stakeholders including Government Departments, Corporate Entities, Medium & Small Scale Businesses, Civil Societies and individuals.

Road traffic crashes is a global health issue and for dealing with it, international agencies like United Nations is working with various countries to curb the number of road crashes and deaths. The UN’s General Assembly has declared the period 2021 – 2030 as Decade of Action for Road Safety wherein the Member Nations are required to take necessary actions to halve the number of road crashes and serious injuries by 2030.

To achieve this target, the stakeholders need to focus on all pillars of road safety. There is immense need to adopt measures suggested in Safe Systems Approach by catering all road users. Let us work together and contribute for the cause to make our roads safer for all.
